Terms

The terms of use, the house rules, and what to do if something feels wrong.
Terms of use
These terms are an agreement between you and south Hassler, a sole proprietorship based in Switzerland ("south", "we", "us"). They apply to the south app and to south-app.com. By using south you agree to them.
1. Who can use south
- You must be at least 18.
- south is open in London for now. You can apply if you live in or visit a city where south is open.
- One person, one account, with your real name and your own photos.
- south is selective: people apply or are invited, and we accept applications by hand. We may decline an application without giving a reason. We look at taste and how people take part. We never decide on appearance, or on race, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or any other protected characteristic.
2. Your account
- Keep your login safe, and tell us if you think someone else is using your account.
- We may ask for a short verification video before accepting you. A person on our team looks at it.
- You can delete your account at any time in Settings.
3. The house rules
Everyone on south follows our house rules (below). They are part of these terms.
4. What you share
- Your photos, messages, stories and voice memos stay yours. You give us permission to store them and show them inside south to the people you share them with, only to run the service. We don't sell them and don't use them in advertising.
- Only share what you have the right to share.
- We may remove anything that breaks these terms or the house rules.
5. Messages
- You can edit and delete your own messages. A deleted message disappears from the chat for everyone.
- For everyone's safety, we keep a record of messages, edits, deletions, pictures and voice memos, including pictures sent to be seen once. Our team opens it only when a conversation is reported, or when the law requires it. Our privacy policy says how long we keep it.
6. Events and places
- Events and places on south are run by our partners or by their own owners. Unless we say so, we are not the organiser of an event.
- Some events have a limited number of places and a waiting list. If you sign up, please come, or cancel before the deadline shown on the ticket.
- If you cancel late or don't come, your sign-ups are paused for two weeks.
- Your check-in code (in the app or in Apple Wallet) is personal. Don't share it.
- Follow the rules of each place and each host.
7. Degrees south and loyalty cards
- A visit counts only when a place's staff scan your code. Each visit goes on that place's card and turns your compass further south.
- The degrees you earn, the levels and what they unlock are described in the app. Degrees count for 12 months, and are never earned by spending.
- Each place chooses its own reward and how many visits it takes. A reward can only be used at the place that gives it, before its card resets.
- Degrees, cards and rewards have no cash value, and can't be exchanged, sold or passed to someone else.
- We may correct degrees, cards or rewards obtained by mistake or by misuse, and we may change how degrees are counted. We tell you in the app about important changes.
8. Private events
Some events are private. Their name, place, details and pictures stay inside south. Please don't screenshot, save or share them. We may restrict access for anyone who does.
9. Pausing, banning and leaving
- You can leave at any time by deleting your account.
- We may limit, pause or end an account that breaks these terms or the house rules, or that puts others at risk. When we do, we tell you, and you can ask us to look at the decision again by writing to contact@south-app.com.
10. Our service
- We work to keep south running and safe, but we can't promise it will always be available or free of errors. We may change or remove features.
- We are not responsible for what other people do, or for events and places run by others, as far as the law allows.
- Nothing in these terms limits our liability where the law doesn't allow it to be limited, for example for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you are a consumer, you keep all your legal rights.
- Otherwise, our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or £50, whichever is higher.
11. Changes
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
12. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by Swiss law, and the Swiss courts at our place of business are competent. Because south is offered to people in the UK, we also follow the UK rules that apply to us, including consumer protection, data protection and online safety law. If you are a consumer in the UK, you keep every protection the law where you live gives you, and you can bring a claim in your local courts.
13. Contact
contact@south-app.com. south is run by south Hassler, a sole proprietorship based in Switzerland.
House rules
south works because everyone looks after it. Five rules, short enough to remember.
- Turn up, or cancel early. A place you don't use is a place someone else could have had.
- Respect the room. The people, the host and the place.
- Keep private events private. What is inside south stays inside south.
- No selling, no spam. south is not a place to promote anything.
- Be who you say you are. Your name and your photos are real.
Never on south
- Harassment, threats, bullying, or unwanted sexual messages or pictures.
- Hate against anyone for who they are.
- Nudity, sexual content, graphic violence, or anything illegal.
- Anything involving someone under 18.
- Sharing someone's private information or pictures without their permission, including pictures sent to be seen once.
- Pretending to be someone else, scams, or advertising.
When you meet someone
Meet in the places on south, tell a friend where you are going, and leave whenever you want to.
If a rule is broken
Report it from the profile or the conversation. We may remove content, give a warning, pause sign-ups, or ban an account. For serious cases, we may contact the authorities. See "Safety and reports" below.
Safety and reports
If something on south feels wrong, tell us. Reports are confidential: the person you report is never told who reported them.
How to report
- In the app, open the person's profile or the conversation, and choose Report from its menu.
- You can also block the person at the same time.
- Or write to contact@south-app.com. This also works if you don't have an account.
What happens next
- A person on our team reviews every report. We aim to look at serious reports within 24 hours.
- To understand what happened, we may open the reported conversation, including deleted and edited messages and pictures.
- We may remove content, give a warning, pause sign-ups, or ban the account. We report illegal content to the authorities where the law requires it.
Asking us to look again
If we took action on your account or your content, or if you are unhappy with how we handled a report, write to contact@south-app.com with the subject "Review", within 30 days. Someone who wasn't part of the first decision will look at it, and we'll reply in writing. You can use the same address for any concern about how we meet our duties under the UK Online Safety Act.
In an emergency
If you or someone else is in danger, call 999 in the UK, or 112 elsewhere in Europe.
